City and Event Offers / FüssenFüssenFüssen - Bavaria’s romantic core. The beautiful town amidst the Allgaeu region is the southernmost point of the famous Romantic Route. It is known for its Old Town flair and its art and culture highlights make it one of Germany’s most beautiful holiday regions. Bavaria’s highest town above sea level is framed by impressive high mountain peaks, soft Allgaeu hills and more than ten lakes. Füssen is one of the stages along the German Alpine Route and an ideal starting point for a visit of the royal castles Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Linderhof and the Wies Church (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Füssen’s Old Town impresses with the Hohes Schloss Castle, one of south Germany’s most beautiful fortresses of the late Middle Ages, and its unique façade paintings. High above the banks of the river Lech, the monumental baroque monastery St. Mang is enthroned, also hosting the Füssen Museum, where visitors can admire richly decorated baroque halls, valuable historic lutes and violins and Bavaria’s oldest Dance of Death cycle. The perfect end to a culture-filled day is relaxing in one of the numerous cafés or out in the open while sipping a cappuccino. From the romantic Old Town it is only a stone’s throw to the car-free nature reserve ‘Faulenbacher Tal’, to boat excursions on Forggensee Lake, to the ‘Allgaeu Riviera’ at Hopfensee Lake or to the calm paths leading along the banks of Weissensee Lake. In the evenings, fairy tale king Ludwig II comes back to life, when the musical Ludwig2 is performed in the festival theatre of Neuschwanstein Castle. Population: 14.000; guest beds: 7.400 Lake Cruises (Forggensee)The 12-km-long and up to 3-km-wide lake Forggensee, surrounded by a fantastic Alpine panorama, is the fourth largest lake in Bavaria.
