Erlangen

Erlangen is located at an altitude of 279 m above sea level at the confluence of the rivers Regnitz and Schwabach in the Central Franconian Basin. It is part of the Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen area and is situated in the heart of the European metropolitan region of Nuremberg.
Erlangen is one of Germany´s best-preserved towns with a baroque layout. The right-angled design of the streets, the square blocks, the protestant reformist Huguenot Church and the palace add to the city centre’s character and are considered outstanding architectural masterpieces. Therefore, it is not surprising that Johann Freyesleben called Erlangen “one of the most beautiful towns in Europe” in 1775. Erlangen maintained its many facets until today: “Franconian Berkeley”, front-runner for high tech products, cyclists’ paradise, town of the Huguenots and meeting place for many culture lovers. Erlangen is open-minded, an attitude that evolved from the arrival of the Huguenots in 1686. The foundation of the university in 1743 and the installation of the Siemens-Schuckert works also contributed to this cosmopolitan flair. People of over 180 nationalities live in Erlangen. This is reflected in the town´s cheerful atmosphere, making a stroll down the 1.4 km long shopping area in the city centre a special experience.
