Düsseldorf, the capital of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, only has a population of 570,000 but a total of 12 million people live within commuting distance (50 km radius). It is situated at the foot of the Bergisches Land region in the Lower Rhine Valley. The Rhine river flows through the city on a length of 42 km. Famous Germans called Düsseldorf their hometown. Today, institutions like the Goethe-Museum, the Heinrich-Heine-Institute or the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule (university) remind us of the city´s famous sons. Düsseldorf’s Königsallee with its elegant shopping arcades is one of the world’s most beautiful boulevards. The Altstadt (Old Town) with its 260 cosy pubs and homebrew taverns is well-known as "the world´s longest counter".
